VS. April 1, 2025 Devotional

by David Joynt on April 01, 2025

GENESIS 2:24-25 | 24 Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

Yesterday we discussed, eros or desire, in it’s distorted form, in which we reduce sexual moments to pleasurable but impersonal encounters. God’s design enhances eros by ensuring it is not isolated from other forms of love.

Within a good marriage, there are three other forms of love powerfully present. Philia, or friendship love, includes communication and understanding, shared interests and activities, and the creation of a common story of mutual admiration and respect. Storge, or supportive love, includes encouragement and assistance, helping a partner’s strengths emerge and their struggles become successes. Agape love is the capacity to be committed to another’s good no matter what obstacles occur in life, requiring unconditional devotion, forgiveness, and self-sacrifice. When desire is married to these other loves, our sexuality leads towards mysterious and beautiful oneness.

Which of these four loves are you best at?

Gracious God,

Grow my capacity for friendship, encouragement, and unconditional commitment.

Amen.
