VS. April 11, 2025 Devotional

1 CORINTHIANS 13:4 | 4 Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant.

 

Imagine what your life, and this world, would be like if envy was banished and gratitude reigned. What if the success and achievements of others were a source of excitement for us? Love is patient and kind—and is motivated to bless and help others even when it is difficult. This sets the table for a miraculous blessing: as others make progress we are filled with a vast and renewable joy. Instead of feeling superior to those below and jealous of those above us, we are genuinely grateful for every good thing in the life of everyone else around us. This is a gamechanger for enjoying your life, because every blessing others experience is also a blessing to you.

 

Look today for the blessings of others which you can celebrate and enjoy.

 

 

Gracious God,

I want the vast and renewable joy that comes from celebrating the blessings of others. Grow my heart to this end.

Amen.

David Joynt

Dave Joynt began his service as a pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona in September 2014. This meant a move away from the Northeast, where he has a long history, growing up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and then serving congregations in Delaware and New Jersey for a total of 23 years.

Dave was nurtured in a great church in Bethlehem where his parents, Anne and Carey, served as elders. He graduated in classics from Lehigh University where his Father taught, and then from Oxford, where he met his wife Julia. Ordained in 1988, he completed a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1993.

He and Julia have a son, Tristan, and a daughter, Madeleine.
