MATTHEW 19:3-6 | 3 Some Pharisees came to him, and to test him they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
GENESIS 2:24 | 24 Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Human sexuality is a pliable gift. It can be used to sell, to entice, to control, to seduce, to enmesh, and to exploit. It can distract, amuse, titillate, arouse, and satiate, for a time. It can feed the ego, submerge our reason, and placate animal urges.
However, it is meant to unify, to express life long commitments, to reflect God’s covenant love, and to cement the bonds which bring new generations to life. When God is honored and obeyed it can be sacred sexuality, that is not only healthy but holy, uniting promises, desire, and pleasure in a beautiful mystery in which there is a deep connection of bodies, minds, and souls. This is God’s intent for us, to which Jesus speaks in Matthew 19, referring to Genesis 2:24.
Why are so many people eager to reduce sexuality to immediate desire?
Gracious God,
Grant me a wider and deeper view of desire which keeps in mind not only my biology but my destiny in You.
Amen.
