MATTHEW 22:30 | 30 For in the resurrection people neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like angels of God in heaven.
To be holy is to be like God. God extends His love toward His enemies, those who reject and oppose Him, on the cross. Marriage and family are relatively safe places to learn to love in unselfish ways. Much hurt can happen in families, of course, but they are small and intimate environments that are created freely by mutual attraction and commitment. We marry those we already love and then learn to love them in a deeper way. God then calls us to love beyond the safe environment of the family, becoming examples and witnesses of His concern for a world broken by sin and sorrow.
In the new world God is bringing about, the new heaven and earth, there will be no need for training in love, and hence for marriage. There will be no barriers to love, no miscommunication or confusion, no ugliness or selfishness, no violence or domination. Our love will extend, supernaturally, outward toward others made perfect in Christ, and inward toward our own redeemed selves.
Does this teaching of Jesus surprise you?
Gracious God,
Give me a vision of the joy and community of heaven, when love is complete and abiding.
Amen.
