JOHN 14:12-14 | 12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.
Our attitude toward other’s success is a key measure of our spiritual maturity. Are we grateful when others reach their potential, or do great things, or receive recognition for their achievements? Or are we envious, threatened, and resentful?
In this fascinating chapter, Jesus has claimed to be the unique path to God, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and the One in who the Father is revealed. Philip asks to see the Father, not comprehending that Jesus is the divine Son in whom God is pleased to dwell, the Word made flesh. Notice Jesus’ reaction—He is not angry or defensive, but encouraging Philip and the other disciples to believe, citing the power of His deeds and words. Then Jesus pivots to insist that those who do believe will do greater things than He has done! Now this prediction is only realized because His local presence will become universal, He will work in and through His people via His Spirit. One on one healing or teaching will give way to hospitals and schools and communities of faith. His truth and power will be dispersed. Notice that as He faces the cross, Jesus is excited by what He will help His followers to do!
Are you excited to help others do “greater things”?
Gracious God,
Help me to empower others and rejoice in their achievements.
Amen.
