PSALM 135:15-18 | 15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. 16 They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see; 17 they have ears, but they do not hear, and there is no breath in their mouths. 18 Those who make them and all who trust them shall become like them.

Verse 18 is chilling: “Those who make them and all who trust them shall become like them.” The ones who make them are the metal and woodworkers who fashion the images of the gods in pagan temples. The ones who trust them are the devotees of their various religions. Both those who make and those who trust are utterly deluded, since their alleged gods have no power and no reality.

Far worse is the outcome of this delusion. Some fantasies are simply an idle distraction. But religious idolatry is deadly. Since unreal gods cannot save their disciples have bet on a false hope. Their end is to be like the lifeless objects they foolishly treasured, unable to speak, see, or hear, or breathe.

Pray for those who are trying to follow false and unreal gods.

Gracious God,

We become what we value. Help me value you and seek your glory and goodness.

Amen.
