MATTHEW 25:24-25 | 24 Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, “Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.”
We’ve been examining the many positive reasons to become a diligent disciple, who is whole-hearted in her work and service. There are also negative incentives!
In Matthew 25, Jesus teaches us about Final Judgement. God is like a trusting property owner, who allows his servants to manage his estate while he is away. This is empowering! He shares his
resources with the expectation that they will multiply them, two do, one does not. One servant sees the master as harsh rather than generous, fearsome rather than eager to share his joy and success. So he does no work with the resources he has been given. He buries the money and returns it, without gain or interest.
Work and investment of ourselves and our resources always involves risk. The owner, God, wants us to energetically engage with the abilities and resources he graciously gives us. The only failure is not to try.
Do you embrace the risk of commitment?
Gracious God,
My resources are yours. Help me invest them in ways that multiply the Kingdom.
Amen.
