1 TIMOTHY 6:9-10 | 9 But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.
The phrase the “love of money is the root of all evil” has become widely known in our culture. Sometimes it is misquoted as “money is the root of all evil.” This latter idea makes no sense whatsoever. Since money is a fungible asset it cannot be the basis for all evil! Money is food to sustain us and others, housing for ourselves and the unhoused, it is research for new cures, education that opens opportunity, recreation that renews the body and mind, and it is an endless number of beautiful and wonderful things that enhance life.
It is the love of money, in itself, that is problematic. “Love of money” here means the greedy accumulation of unnecessary things and the obsessive desire for more. It is what some call affluenza—where shopping and owning has replaced worshipping and sharing.
How do you employ your resources?
Gracious God,
Save me from affluenza. May I use my resources for your purposes.
Amen.
