PSALM 90:1-2, 4 | 1 Lord, you have been our dwelling-place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
4 For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night.
Mortality is reality. The Psalmist begins with the eternity of God; something we can only grasp by contrast with the comparative brevity of our own existence. Dr. Bill Miller, in his book Bioverse, suggests that we can calculate the age of the universe to be 13.8 billion years and the existence of Homo Sapiens at 200,000 years. If the age of the universe were a mile in distance, recognizable human existence would be the size of a single human hair, and civilization just 1/40th of that hair, or 5000 years. Now consider the miniscule length of our individual lives and contrast that with the life of the One who brought creation itself into being and who existed before “time itself,” from “everlasting to everlasting”.
Do you take account of our mortality?
Gracious God,
Life is beautiful, brief, and fleeting. Keep mortality in my mind, that I can gain wisdom of heart.
Amen.
