2 CHRONICLES 31:20-21 | 20 Hezekiah did this throughout all Judah; he did what was good and right and faithful before the Lord his God. 21 And every work that he undertook in the service of the house of God, and in accordance with the law and the commandments, to seek his God, he did with all his heart; and he prospered.
Hezekiah came to the throne in 715 BC. He was 25 and served as king until he died at age 54. If you could choose an epitaph, a tribute for your life, you’d be hard pressed to better the Chronicler’s comment about Hezekiah. One of the traditional “deadly sins,” made official by Pope Gregory in 590 AD, was sloth. It’s opposite virtue is diligence. Hezekiah confronted the spiritual decadence and idolatry of the nation, restored the Temple, renewed the covenant, and took down the pagan shrines. Faced with a host of issues he could have been passive or indifferent. Instead he chose to energetically and systematically address the hardest problems. The slothful actor makes excuses, analyzes without acting, hopes problems will solve themselves, and takes the easy way. Hezekiah took his role as a spiritual leader seriously. He was diligent.
Do you ever fight laziness?
Gracious God,
Show me the problems you want me to address, grant me the courage and energy to do so.
Amen.
