HABAKKUK 1:14-15, 17 | 14 You have made people like the fish of the sea, like crawling things that have no ruler. 15 The enemy brings all of them up with a hook; he drags them out with his net, he gathers them in his seine; so he rejoices and exults.
17 Is he then to keep on emptying his net, and destroying nations without mercy?
The death of King Josiah and the loss of his reforms, along with the triumph of brutal Babylon, created a theological crisis for God’s people. Many had believed that a return to the Mosaic Covenant would guarantee the nation’s welfare and this view is prominent in Deuteronomy. Israel was chosen by God, graciously selected from among all the nations of earth to be a holy people (Deuteronomy 7:6). If they avoid the dangers of self-sufficiency (Deuteronomy 8:17), and self-righteousness (Deuteronomy 9:4), fulfilling their social responsibilities (Deuteronomy 10:12-22), then they prosper and will be blessed. Failing to keep the covenant will result in punishment. This simple formula, faithfulness leads to reward, and failure to disaster underlies the blessings and curses attached to the covenant (Deuteronomy 33).
