Worldwide Christmas December 20, 2025 Devotional

by David Joynt on December 20, 2025

LUKE 7:18-19 | 18 The disciples of John reported all these things to him. So John summoned two of his disciples 19 and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?”

Languishing in jail, awaiting execution, John has one more lesson to teach us, one last ego adjustment to help us make. He shows us the value of questions. When John is surprised that Jesus wants to be baptized, he asks a question: "Shouldn't You be baptizing me?" When this peculiar Messiah seems not to be demanding His rightful authority and judging the people and powers of the earth, John puts the question, "Are You the One?" We miss so many opportunities for learning and reassurance because we are afraid to ask. We don't want to trumpet our confusion or display the limits of our knowledge. John's ego was small enough to let him ask.

When was the last time you asked a question?

Notice also that John picks his helper with great care. He asks Jesus his spiritual questions. Do you consult His words first and foremost?

Gracious God,

Help us bring our questions to You with open hearts and minds. Teach us the truth.

Amen.
