JOHN 1:1-5 | 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.
This week we shall study the first few verses of John 1. These verses contain a series of magnificent assertions, that frame our understanding of God and life. Everything we know, and everything we are has its source in God. Life is not an accident or a necessity. It is not the result of a blind, random process, and it is not driven by an impersonal force. All things were created through the gracious agency of God’s Word. Life itself as a gift. There is no second power of rival agency responsible for creation. God has exclusive authority, as sole creator, over everything He has made.
The stars above and the firm ground below, the falling snow, shining sun, pounding surf, the sound of music and the ears to listen, the peal of laughter, and the heart to feel joy and sorrow—all are gifts.
Since life is a gift, (originating, without compulsion or necessity in God’s, free decision to create us, and all manner of creatures, great and small, animate and inanimate) we should feel about it the way children do on Christmas morning—glad and grateful. Do you agree or disagree?
Gracious God,
Restore my excitement about the gift of life. Remove any cynicism or world weariness from my soul.
Amen.
