JOHN 1:1-5 | 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.
John 1:5 says "The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it." Real grace and genuine love throws the world's selfishness and evil into clearer relief. Light reveals the depth of darkness. Jesus' approach to forgiveness, enemy love, generosity, and other virtues dramatically changed our conceptions of virtue and goodness. He also encountered fierce opposition. Darkness seeks to overcome light. There is a battle within creation and human history. Following Jesus is a form of conscription; it is like joining a resistance movement against injustice, exploitation, abuse, and deception. His light shines in the darkness, and the promise is that the darkness has not, will not, and cannot overcome it. "Though the wrong seems often so strong, He is the ruler yet."
Pray for those who protect victims of crime and punish offenders in our criminal justice system as well as those who work to reform offenders.
Gracious God,
Remind me of the battle going on around me and give me the courage to contest wrong and fight evil in Your name.
Amen.
