A Manger Seen, Week 1, Day 2

LUKE 2:8-9 | In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

People are always trying to consign God activity to religious places. There is work and then there is worship. There is Sunday and then there is Monday through Friday. There is my faith and then the rest of my life. There are experts on God and then there are ordinary people.

That is why I love the story of the shepherds. They hear the angel’s announcement in the middle of the night shift. Heavenly hymns happen in the countryside. There is an epiphany amid the sheep without a sanctuary or a priest. The workplace belongs to God as much as the temple. His best witnesses are as likely to be wearing tunics or overalls and not necessarily robes or stoles.

Have you ever had a God experience at work?
Do you ever pray at work? Or about work?
One of the best things about the shepherds is their curiosity. They wanted to go and see what the angels were talking about. Are you curious about the activity of God?
How do you respond to interruptions in the middle of your work?
Think of someone you know who works and witnesses. Ask them how they do it.
