Day 19: Direction

How expansive is your love list? When was the last time you showed love to a stranger?

Day 19: Direction

JOHN 13:34
LUKE 6:32

How does Jesus love? He loves expansively. Most cultures stress the special bonds of friends and family, the small circle that typically absorbs most of our time and attention. You can only know so many people well, only engage in so many deep interactions, right? There is a common sense logic to the strategy of limiting our love to the primary people in our lives, and really investing in these relationships. After all, Jesus gave disproportionate attention to His disciples.

True, but it did not prevent Him from extending Himself toward strangers, people in need, questioners, and even enemies and opponents. God’s love is not drawn from a limited supply, to be doled out in careful increments. It is an ocean-size resource, and can be tapped again and again. Jesus emphasizes that it is easy to love those who return our affection, but the real test is how we behave to those who do not.
