PSALM 23:4c | 4c your rod and your staff—they comfort me.

LUKE 15:3-7 | 3 So he told them this parable: 4 "Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, "Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.' 7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

The shepherd’s staff was used to guide and corral the sheep, and as a walking stick on rocky and high terrain. Some dangers do not arise from outside threats—they are self-inflicted. Sheep can separate from the flock, wander away, get lost, give into panic, and get stuck in a thicket. The shepherd keeps the sheep together and on safe paths with his staff. God’s direction does not lead to dead ends! He wants us to have life to the full. When we stray—he seeks us, even to the point of danger.

Have you ever wandered away from the flock?

 Do you feel Shepherd led?

 Do you have self-inflicted wounds?
