Pray Without Ceasing, Week 8, Day 51

by David Joynt on July 22, 2019

PSALM 139:2-4, 6, 17 | You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.
How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

Privacy is a huge concern in our interconnected digital age, when governments and corporations and bad actors seem to be able to access so much of our personal data. So what exactly can God access? The psalmist tells us that our movements, our words and thoughts, and all our “ways,” or habitual behaviors, are known by God. This is an astounding fact. We struggle to understand our own thoughts and behavior and we devote entire fields of study, like psychology and sociology and history, to the task of understanding ourselves and others. Yet our knowledge is partial and contested. God’s knowledge is total and accurate, of everyone at all times. This kind of knowledge is “too wonderful for us.” He never forgets a single moment in your life, or a single feeling of your heart!

Who knows you best?

Are you good at revealing your true self?
