Questions Week 13, Day 2

by David Joynt on July 24, 2017

MATTHEW 5:17-20

If I was debating Marcion today, I’d want to make two key points. First that the new things we learn about God through Jesus didn’t give us an entirely different deity, but rather a deeper understanding of the Heavenly Father identified within the Old Testament. God’s revelation is progressive in scripture, and so new insights modify older assumptions. But progress does not imply complete discontinuity. Jesus says this explicitly in the Sermon on the Mount—”Don’t think I’ve come to destroy the law, instead I’ve come to fill it even fuller with meaning.” Jesus quotes the O.T. 180 times, with approval and respect. In his teaching on the law in Matthew, he does not take positions antithetical to O.T. law,  but instead brings out the deeper, wider meaning.
