Questions Week 15, Day 4

by David Joynt on August 09, 2017

LUKE 12:4-7

The word Jesus uses for hell is the name “Gehenna,” from the Hebrew word Gehinnom, which refers to a small valley in Jerusalem used as the city trash dump. It has a place where smoldering fires burned day and night. Jesus used this image, familiar to listeners, to evoke fear of judgement and provoke a change of heart.

As an image, it should not be pressed too far, as if it was a literal description. But what we do clearly take away is the sense of a “holy fear” which respects God’s capacity and authority to judge human lives. We fear many earthly authorities. What about the One who is in charge of eternity?

Do you live as if there will be a judgement?

FAMILY TIME— God is eager to forgive. Why are we not so eager to confess and reform?
