Soul Songs January 21 Devotional

PSALM 108:1-5| 1 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make melody. Awake, my soul! 2 Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn. 3 I will give thanks to you, Lord, among the peoples, and I will sing praises to you among the nations. 4 For your steadfast love is higher than the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth.

The lyrics to How Great Thou Art were written by Swedish cleric Carl Boberg in the form of a nine stanza poem in 1885. He was communing with nature, first in the form of a spectacular mid-day thunderstorm and then the brilliant sunshine to follow. Rev. Stuart Hine translated the lyrics and rearranged the tune. The chorus goes:

“Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee,

How great Thou art, how great Thou art!”

It is worth asking yourself — does your soul sing? There is a thrilling exaltation we can experience in the spiritual life, a lifting up beyond ourselves, a joyous awe.

What makes your soul sing?

Gracious God,

We want to see you and sense your presence in the ordinary and everyday. But we also long for our souls to soar. Feed us with your glory.

Amen.
