PHILIPPIANS 3:12 | 12 Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
In the previous verses, Paul lays out his spiritual ambitions, “that I may know Christ and the power of His resurrection, sharing His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, obtaining the resurrection from the dead.” He wants the new divine life that comes in relationship to Jesus, and trusts that he will become more like his Savior, as he works to spread His love and truth in a resistant world.
Notice that Paul, who seemingly never lacked for confidence, is open that he has a long way to go in his spiritual quest. He eliminates, and sets aside, all manner of programs for spiritual development that promise perfection. Because his goal is to become like Jesus, his growth will always be a growth in humility—until he is transformed by God’s power.
