The Upside Down World Week 8, Day 1

by David Joynt on October 29, 2017

“THE UNJUST MIRACLE”

MATTHEW 20:1-16

My local Home Depot is on Thomas Road, and whenever I visit the avenue leading to parking, the area is full of men waiting to be hired. They are what economists call “casual” or day laborers. Without a regular job, they must find new employment each day, or if they are hired for a big task, several times a week. This is the situation behind Jesus’ parable about the workers hired to help in the vineyard. When offered employment, the workers negotiate a daily rate, but they have little leverage because there are many men in a similar position, and turning down any offer may mean having no work offers. Thus, day laborers are often exploited. What are the safeguards that normally protect workers? Work environments should protect everyone’s interest and reflect everyone’s contribution. Do you agree?
