Your Summer Reading List July 10, 2026 Devotional

4 For a while he refused, but later he said to himself, ‘Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’
Luke 18:4-5

The unlikely hero in this story is the persistent widow. With great courage and ability she does the unthinkable—confronts and wears down the person in power. This corrupt judge was looking for a payday and instead met a person of great conviction. Jesus helps us understand what this parable is about. On one level it is about God’s justice; that God will act justly as the Kingdom comes. Moreover, Jesus shares this parable to emphasize to the disciples their need to be in constant prayer and to never give up. We are the widow in this story. We are called to do what is out of character; to pray in the face of the difficulties of this world while remaining steadfast in our waiting for the future glory of God’s just kingdom.
