2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people.”
Luke 18:2
The first character we meet in this parable is a judge. This judge is not from the people of Israel but most likely a hired Roman magistrate, paid to repress the people. History and tradition speak of such judges as withholding proper justice unless a bribe is to come. This judge neither fears God or cares for the people. On one level this judge is a metaphor for the difficulty of this life and the injustice experienced by many. The Bible nor Jesus ever promise that this life will be easy, however we know with great confidence that Jesus enters into our trials and tribulations. Jesus shares with His disciples and you today, “I have said this to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution, but take courage: I have conquered the world!” (John 16:33)
How do you feel about the difficult reality experienced in our world?
Are you facing a difficult person or situation for which you need to invite in the peace of God?
